Kukutanda sweda, also known as Kukutanda kizhi, is a traditional treatment using a bolus made of egg yolk and herbal medicines to provide relief for conditions like pain and inflammation. The procedure involves three stages: Purva karma (pre-procedure), Pradhana Karma (main procedure), and Pashyat Karma (post-procedure). During Purva karma, a patient is selected based on a thorough examination by a qualified physician, and suitable medicines are chosen accordingly. In Pradhana Karma, the patient lies on a droni and receives a massage followed by the application of the heated Kukutanda bolus for about 25 to 30 minutes. After the treatment, the person is advised to rest. This therapy is beneficial for conditions like Bell’s palsy and skin nourishment as it provides a mild snehana effect, fomentation effect, and nourishing effect. The egg yolk in the bolus contains essential proteins and vitamins A, D, E, and K, aiding in nourishing and rejuvenating the skin. The heat from the bolus increases blood circulation, promoting the supply of nutrients and oxygen, and aiding in the removal of waste products from cells.
